During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against Sunderland two months later, he scored. Another occasion, against Manchester City not long later, well, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the city to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in 2017, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, also. “In fact,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I got well angry,” the forward admits, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. We went to play United and I was in fine form. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I was without a signed deal, goals were flowing, many stories circulated, as you’d expect. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Man United, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear the validity, but had they contacted me, I would have wanted to stay at Athletic. It’s a privilege.”

At the facility, Bilbao, the morning session is about to start; after it, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another trip to the UK, now to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. This is proving a difficult season for the club, partly because of the demands of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a final at home by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary flanked by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in four decades. Five, six games with them and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but I reflect on it as a beneficial experience because it shifted the outlook. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, you have everything, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. If your hips aren’t balanced, correct it. With decent ankle function, enhance it further. All the minor details: perform them.
“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have experienced contact repeatedly. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: my physique was slight. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Training finishes, but further effort is needed. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. The striker moved upset in 2020, aged 23, joining the second tier. With Sabadell in that season, he got three strikes in numerous matches. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day a vacancy arises in your position, recall is possible. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. The trophy success, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks savor the moment. Particularly after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with 16 in 2023-24, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
