Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell International Gifts for Charity

Passing on unneeded gifts could be seen as slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, will offload around 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures on official trips. This unusual assortment is said to contain items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They will be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. An exact timeline has not been finalized, but the intention is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the revenue donated to a selection of charitable causes.

The presents are said to be kept in a repository on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been sitting unused indefinitely.

A complete inventory is yet to be disclosed, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The query raised if a statutory cap on gift value was being respected. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.

An International Array of Presents

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the leader of Albania, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A ceramic bowl from the ex-American leader.
  • A digital device from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Watercolour paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • An assortment including makeup, a board, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the strangest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.

Diplomatic Backdrop

The prime minister has received praise, mainly from her own political sphere, with winning over international counterparts and making Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

This unique auction symbolizes a distinct method to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a leader's tenure.
