The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, was “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. A separate mechanism changed the rotary movement into a sideway’s motion feeding the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system moved the wood forward a measured step per stroke.
“Each element was simple by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate them in order that the machine acted within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending motion while advancing with each return motion. This constituted a remarkably clever use of basic parts.”
