RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.
The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.
The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
