As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the world's most polluted city were faced with exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the city recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15 to 20 times exceeding acceptable standards.

Fireworks Ban and Current Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the deadly smog that engulfs the city as the cold season begins.

Yet in recent months, the newly elected regional government petitioned the judicial authority to request a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a balance between "heritage and public health".

Judicial Decision and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, the court agreed to the proposal, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Numerous air quality sensors throughout the capital recorded pollution spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

Cross-Border Effects

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also sparked a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming declining air quality in Lahore on contaminants traveling from across the border following the events.

Chronic Environmental Issue

Extremely elevated levels of pollution in the capital have continued as a major issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Around celebratory seasons, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been documented to spike to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the world's most polluted city.

Multiple Pollution Factors

The problem in the capital is attributed to a convergence of various sources including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring areas of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, generating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the capital as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million inhabitants calling home the capital region is substantial, according to numerous investigations.

The contaminated air results in increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

The pollution is estimated to be accounting for approximately 10k early mortalities annually in the city.
