Preamble
Forest vs Malmö and memories of 1979. The both teams have a special connection, also meeting in Forest's most recent continental tour in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the continental championship 46 years ago that links these clubs, with the record-breaking signing Trevor Francis netting the decisive goal of a largely forgettable match to secure historic victory for the the English club.
"Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the festivities and cheers, stood for a moment on a bench serenely viewing the revelry," wrote the match reporter. This represented an outstanding achievement that it is hard to see being repeated – from Second Division to continental competition in three seasons."
One should note to reflect upon Malmö, who became the pioneering and only Swedish club to reach the final under English manager Bob Houghton.
Tonight's game is a very different to that summit, closer perhaps to the previous continental meeting between Forest and Malmö in the mid-nineties. Forest are riding high after thrashing Liverpool at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö haven't played officially since last month following the conclusion of their domestic campaign. The general expectation is on the English side tonight.
Plenty of other action on offer in this live coverage. Rangers have already been defeated by a European rival this season. Rangers are at the foot of the competition table at the half-way stage of the group stage with exactly zero. They desperately need a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a late surge for a qualification place.
Coverage will persist with all nine of the 8pm kick-offs and provide the current standings from the concluded fixtures, including Villa vs Young Boys and Feyenoord v Celtic.
