The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Athletes are granted the option to challenge specific decisions from the official, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
